This page offers information on areas that have been known to produce color in Tuolumne County.

Nearly 3/4 of
the gold recovered from this county was from placer deposits. Many consider
the placer deposits here to be the best in the Sierra Nevada range. Total
production for Tuolumne County has been in excess of 11,000,000 ounces
to date.
Moccasin Creek runs parallel to Highway 49. If
you travel south on 49 just about 2 miles, just before the Mariposa
County line there is an area of the creek that moves more east/west than
the rest of its course. this is below the McAlpine mine (northeast side
of the highway). We expect good production from this stretch of the creek.
The Tuolumne River can produce well for you. We recommend any of
the tributaries or feeder creeks to the Tuolumne River as a start. the
Big Hum Bug Creek north of Groveland should provide good production and
is a suggested starting place for the Tuolumne River course.
All of the water courses in the areas of Big Oak Flat, Groveland,
Deer Flat, and Coulterville
will no doubt produce well and should not be overlooked... these are very
rich areas.
Any of the creeks and streams in the vicinity of Jamestown
are expected to produce good color to start your search.
