   Madera County was never the "Shining Star" of the gold country in prospecting attempts as the total production has been less than a quarter million ounces to date. There does remain however, the occasional find that may bring you back for more as this area didn't receive the flood of attention that many of the areas farther north did.

  In the Raymond and Knowles area, a pretty fair amount has been recovered on what is now privately held land.

 There were intermittent finds at the granite quarry in Raymond. Recovery may still be had throughout the back hills in the grouping of: Raymond, Knowles, Coarsegold, North Fork and O'Neal's. The creeks in this area have been known to produce although not to much "coarse gold" in around here although the name of Coarsegold may lead you to think so. You might want to try the two larger watercourses through this area, the Chowchilla and Fresno Rivers. There have been a number of smaller lode mining operations in this area over the years. Individual prospecting attempts result some success as well.

 Coarsegold Creek can still produce pretty well in small stuff.

 Farther north of Coarsegold on HI-41 may produce a little color in the area of Sugar Pine. There was some modest prospecting here at one time near what was a logging camp, saw mill, lumber flume and railroad.

 At the town of Friant on the San Joaquin River, pretty good recovery was recorded although none recently. During the building of the dam, there was fairly significant production which helped to offset the dams construction costs.
