This page offers information on gold producing areas in El Dorado County.

indicate public lands and current claims.
The American River has become
synonymous with the gold rush in California, and not just for the discovery
at Sutter's mill. The American River and its tributaries have produced
sizable gold nuggets as well as gold flakes continually for more than
150 years.
There are a number of good gravels on the American
River, in particular above the Rubicon River (in the area of Michigan
Bluff) on the middle fork of the American River has produced well lately
as we have been told. Another good report on the American
River has been due to panning efforts north of Chili Bar on the south
fork. Another area of good production would be on the middle fork of the
American River west of Volcanoville. If you are new to gold panning, the
Auburn State Recreational Area may be the best place to "get your
feet wet" although it is a good idea to go with someone who knows
the ropes no matter where you begin your panning experience.

Good gold nugget specimens and flakes are being pulled from time
to time from Rock Creek.
You can expect the middle fork of the Consumnes River in the Southwest
corner of El Dorado County (east of Nashville) to occasionally produce
small bb sized gold nuggets for you.
We are confident of the potential production just a mile or two
northwest of the Slab Creek Reservoir (Northeast of Placerville). You
may try any of the creeks and streams in this area for good production.
