| Oakhurst
California: An attractive community, Oakhurst is considered the "front door" to the Yosemite Valley from the south. Oakhurst had a very small role in California's gold mining operations. It was a speck of a gold mining camp for a short time in the 1850's as the much larger gold camps of Coarsegold Grub Gulch, and Hildreth captured all of the attention in this part of California. Prior to the gold rush, the Oakhurst area was the destination for representatives of several tribes of Native American Indians. The Chukchansi Yokuts, Mariposa Miwok, and the Mono Indians of the North Fork would meet here in the valley where Oakhurst now resides to trade, settle disputes and establish hunting territory. By the late 1800's however, there remained little of the Oakhurst area Native Americans and the town was re-established by white settlers trading and passing through to Yosemite Valley. Today however, Oakhurst has become an important commercial and residential center for the southern-most communities in the motherlode of California. Oakhurst is a favorite destination for Yosemite and gold country visitors due to its proximity to the south gate of Yosemite National Park. Although there was little extraction of gold in the Oakhurst area, it was kept alive by trading posts until Yosemite could spark regional interest. Oakhurst does offer some very fine dining and lodging facilities as well as small shops while on your way to Yosemite National Park. You will find many hotels in the area and all are economical.
